Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) As of the 1st of July 2020, the new Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) came into full effect. The legislation is designed to protect how all natural and juristic persons use, store and process data. The SAMRC as a responsible statutory science council complies with POPIA. Information pertaining to the SAMRC’s compliance is set out in its POPIA Privacy Notice, the details of which are available on the SAMRC’s official website. The information is further available from the SAMRC’s Deputy Information Officers. The SAMRC receives personal information through prospective users registering on the Research and Innovation Management System (RIMS). The personal information requested on the registration form is necessary for the SAMRC to fully understand its RIMS users who may intend applying for funding or may be registering to fulfill other specialized roles in the organization that require RIMS access. This information is shared with external funders and/or stakeholders where applicable, as well as the SAMRC management for the purpose of successfully completing authorized business processes. The SAMRC processes this personal information strictly in accordance with POPIA. Specifically, the SAMRC undertakes to process the personal information gathered via the RIMS registration process on the basis that (a) it is provided voluntarily and (b) the information will be processed only as far may be necessary and within the limitation and ambit of the original purpose for such registration.
